The historic, downtown district of the Polish city of Krakow, is known as the Krakow Old Town. The place is very intriguing, since the town of Krakow used to be the royal capital of the country for many centuries, until year 1596 when King Sigismund III Vasa relocated it to the city of Warsaw. The Old Town of Krakow was added to the list of UNESCO of World Heritage Sites at the end of the 1970’s. The Old Town, known as Stare Miasto in Polish, is being toady part of the first administrative district of the city.In the past, during the medieval times, the town of Krakow was surrounded by a three-kilometer long defensive wall that featured seven entrances and forty-six towers. The fortifications that surrounded the Old Town were erected for a period of two centuries. The architectural plan of Stare Miasto or the Old Town was arranged after the invasions of the Tatars in year 1259 and in year 1287. The Old Town of Krakow features a Main Square known as Rynek Glowny, which is considered to be the largest medieval town square in Europe. Along the Old Town of Krakow could be seen landmarks such as the Church of Saint Wojciech and the Basilica of Saint Mary, while in the center of the main square is set the Renaissance-style Sukiennice cloth hall, which is today featuring restaurants and gift shops. It is surrounded by noble residences and row houses. Next to the cloth hall Sukiennice could be seen the Tower of the Town Hall and the National Art Gallery. The district of the Old Town is divided by the Royal Road, which served as the route of coronations for many of the Polish Kings. The Royal Route starts at the Church of Saint Florian at the northern flank of the old city walls in the Kleparz suburb and goes through the Barbican of Krakow constructed in year 1499, to enter the Stare Miasto zone through the Florian Gate. The Royal Route in the Old Town goes down the Florianska Street to the Main Square and to the Wawel where was the seat of the Polish royalty. During the nineteenth century the fortifications of the Old Town were demolished, while the moat that was encircling the walls was turned into a green belt, now known as the Planty Park.
